And now for something a bit different...
As the son of an animator, I've been around this stuff my entire life. I thought it might be fun to show you before and after shots from the first movie, curtesy the good folks at U.S. MangaCorps and The Anime Hyperguide. The shots below come from the Hyperguide CD-ROM, and are only 20 of over 2000 shots on that CD. I've lessened the quality of the pictures a bit (they do look better on the CD-ROM) to keep their lawyers happy but I wish to let you (and them) know that I actively support people BUYING the CD-ROM, and that the images here are meant as a simple tribute, meant to EDUCATE the Anime viewing public. As educational material, it's protected by the First Amendment, and I've quoted you properly.
Anyway, here we go.....

Graviton City, from it's early stage to it's final form

A-ko
getting a first look at C-ko's lunch. I like how they changed her look from
"barfo" to "dead-zone"

C-ko vs. Mari: Blue Side. If you look at the
drawing you can see the notation C-ko in her hair, to let the
animators know whose back they need to draw.

Leaning against a bank of televisions.
Notice that the sketch artist left the detail of the screens vague so that
the animators could add what they wanted. In this case, as suspiciously
familiar character (Madoka of Kimagure Orange Road?)

A great bit if for the backgrounds if nothing else. The background
was thought of later, and using a child-like crayon was a good touch. Also
notice that C-ko isn't in the original sketch?

Funky Meatballs? No! Duck! Akigiyama
Missiles!

C-ko! Save yourself! Dee protests...
"I'm really not that kind of person!"

Dear Captain Harlock... er... Napolipalita
finally loses it. "I am woman! Hear me Roar!"

That arrow over C-ko's shoulder means that she's to move up and
out of frame. A happy moment the day after the rescue.
